Yes

You'll at the least want to upgrade

1. RAM to 4 GB (buy a 2 GB stick)

2. Good video card 5770 Radeon/Nvidia 450 GTS or better

3. A new power supply (PSU) that can handle the video card's power requirements

4. The Core 2 Duo E8400 is still a decent gaming processor, albeit 2 cores only, but you can live with that

5. You'll probably want to pick up a cheap hard drive for around $50 or so too. 500GB or so

EDIT: You don't need the same 'version' video card. Any PCI Express x16 compatible GPU will do

Thats not a bad computer as is. The Core 2 processor isn't really that that bad, but it only has 2 cores. You could upgrade it to a Core 2 Quad, but that could be difficult and/or problematic, so I would just stick with it and attempt to overclock it if you want.

I personally use this graphics card because it's a very low power card, but it's brand new and still very powerful. That means you won't need a new PSU.

This is about the best graphics card you can get for that system, as the core 2 processor will only limit it, and you're PSU probably won't support bigger video cards. But that very same 6850 lets me play all my games on the highest settings with room to spare. Look through this list and buy the card that you like

This one is a bit cheaper, and will still run everything just fine.

This RAM is pretty good, and it's cheap for a 4GB dual channel set.

the only upgrade I see at the moment, if 64 bit OS more memory say 8Gb and possibly another or larger hard drive, I have a similar setup but 32 bit and I still use a 160 Gb drive, I just optimised the drive with System Mechanics 10 and plenty of room. The other upgrade is another motherboard and CPU i3 - i7 chip, depends on your cash flow?

Yes, you should be able to upgrade the computer. Just be sure to purchase the same version of Graphics card and RAM. When you look into purchasing RAM, for this computer the only info you will need is: Technology DDR3 SDRAM - Non-ECC (make sure that the new RAM you purchase is DDR3 SDRAM.)
