I have recently had to reinstall Windows XP on my PC due to problems that could not be resolved. I used the CD that came along with the computer when I bought it.
I thought everything went OK until I noticed there was no sound. After going into Device Manager, it has 4 problems...as follows...

Other devices.....
! Ethernet Controller
! PCI Modem
! Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
------------------------------------------
Sound video & game controllers....
! IDT High Definition Audio Codec

I have been to Dell's website to check out the drivers but none of them match my problems.
I have also used the Drivers & Utilities CD that came with the PC but that didn't help either.
This is driving me up the wall.
Can anybody please help and possibly advise me what to do to resolve these problems?
Thank you in advance.

This is the page for you to download the drivers for your Dell Dimension 3100 PC, sir.

The reason you may not recognise the specific devices your Device Manager is telling you there may be a problem with is purely down to what they're called on the Dell website. i.e. the Ethernet Controller is under the Network subheading, and the PCI Modem is under the Communication subheading. The Sound, Video & Game Controllers, for the purpose of your sound card would come under the subheading Audio.

You may need to check the list of components included in your computer on the paperwork that you got with your computer to correctly identify which specific drivers you require, but my advice would be to download them all. You can then save them to CD for any time in the future that you might need them.

Best of luck to you.

Go to hhttp://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html and download Everest.

Run the program and do the scan. It should tell you what hardware you have. Go to the multimedia part of Everest and it should tell you what sound hardware you are running. Then google the drivers for whatever it is and download them. Should fix the problem.

You should visit the Dell support site and make sure you have the correct drivers: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~ck=anavml
