I have an Intel Pentium D 820 and an Intel D946GZiS motherboard with Windows XP SP3.

I'll upgrade my pc, so I think in buy an AMD Phenom processor (with new motherboard).

My question is: If I change the processor, from intel to amd, and the motherboard, do I have to reinstall Windows or it will autoconfigure?

Sry about my english.

Contrary to what some say you will probably have to reinstall XP, not because of the cpu being different but because of the motherboards chipsets being different. The hard drive has the drivers for the Intel board on it and the AMD board probably wont fire up because its chipsets wont work with drivers not designed for them. If the Northbridge, the heart of the board, doesn't fire up you wont get even close to having Windows "reconfigure itself" becuae you will be going nowhere.

Out of about 20 board swaps I've done only once did I not have to reinstall the OS if the new board had a different chipset. That was with Vista Ulimate. Every XP swap I did with different chipset boards required a OS reinstall. I haven't done a swap with XP that has SP3 thou. I build high-end gaming rigs and everyone in my circle went with Vista before XP SP3 came out. Althou you may be pleasantly surprised and have your rig fire right up you should plan on probably having to do a reinstall of XP and back up data and have your XP CD and key handy before you do the swap. Personally, when I do an upgrade like that I'd start with a fresh install of Windows anyway. Should reinstall the OS every 2 years or so to get rid of all the junk.

There should be a good shop that does computers close to your home. Let them put a fresh copy of Windows in your computer. You can only hope they are Hp they do the best updates. This is a good way to experience reverse engineering putting you new motherboard on. You probably need to know not to over do much more than a finger wipe on the processor and on the heat sink of silver paste. I don't even buy it yet because it stays pliable and easy to smear.

It *should* update automatically.

If it doesn't, reboot in Safe Mode (hit F8 after the BIOS screen but before the Windows load screen) and go into Control Panels > System > Hardware and have it redetect things.

You may have some problems, including Windows complaining that you need to get a new Windows license.

If this happens, you can call / email MicroSoft and explain the motherboard replacement and they will give you a new key.

You should be ok though, unless you want to reinstall due to problems or something.

the respond on your question isn't definate in all circumstances yet often in case you get a motherboard with a similar chipset then you relatively won't could reinstall abode windows, yet in some if it relatively is basically a similar type and is no longer too plenty greater recent/older than the previous motherboards chipset then you relatively won't could reinstall abode windows. In asserting this in case you're making plans on changing motherboard i could strongly propose reinstalling abode windows as in spite of if it boots you nevertheless risk having matters which includes adverse overall performance, BSOD's and different unpredictable behaviour as a consequence of previous drivers. in case you're able to reinstall to a diverse motherboard it relatively is unlikely the hp cd will artwork yet it relies upon from time to time it relatively is no longer real, in spite of in case you're in a position to flee with using your cd key with yet another abode windows cd (no count number if it relatively is against licensing agreements i'm uncertain if hp's licensing is comparable to an aftermarket replica there should not be an argument using your hp key on an aftermarket cd as you have stored hardware from the unique computing device so it relatively is nevertheless considered a similar device) Imo superb guess is to reinstall abode windows in case you could if thats no longer an option objective at getting a motherboard with precisely a similar chipset to maximise your opportunities or much greater ideal get a similar motherboard Edit: there's no longer a one hundred% answer on your question except u get a similar mobo, i've got had a pair of cases the place i've got replaced a motherboard thats a 300 and sixty 5 days or so previous with a thoroughly diff type and it relatively is booted positive yet to be risk-free i nevertheless continuously reinstall as often the possibility isn't well worth it in my experisnce thou chipset is the proscribing element of no count number if or no longer additionally often times permitting/disabling acpi can help, and uninstalling your disk controllers from interior abode windows are often powerful to get the computing device as properly into an previous set up.
