So I have built my PC. Long story short, when I turn it on everything whirs up, the hard drive hums etc. Everything seems to be working. But as soon as it is hooked up, there is 'no sync'.

I know this isn't a problem of the cable or monitor as I have tested it on other PCs and it's fine. So it must be something in my computer, but what?

Any diagnostics would be great.

Geez, no specific information to go on...

Are you using a graphics card? Remove it - use onboard video to configure the system.

Using onboard video? Call your motherboard support.

Disconnect everything from the motherboard except the Ram. If the motherboard has onboard graphics, enable the onboard graphics in the BIOS. If it does not have onboard graphics then you will have to use beep codes to diagnose it. The only thing you want plugged in is the ram, keyboard and power supply.

This link helps you understand beep codes.

Turn on the system and see what it does. Do you get a display from the onboard display or a series of beeps. If you have onboard graphics then you should get a message that you do not have a hard drive. If you do not have on board graphics then you should get a series of beeps telling you that you have no video. If you get nothing when you turn it on look at the diagnostic lights and see what they tell you. You have only three parts that could be causing the problem.

If it turn on and you got the above message then you can start adding things. Starting with the video card. Make sure that you disable onboard graphics if you have them. Then turn it on and see what messages you get. At this point it should display no hard drive or no boot device.

At this point add the hard drive. If you have gotten this far then you can add the DVD and try to load Windows.

I assume you get only one short beep when booting the computer meaning that everything is o.k. with the bootup.

If your monitor has various inputs (vga dvi, hdmi) make sure that your monitor settings are correct. Check all the monitor settings for best results.

Hope this helps

The card or the motherboard are the usual problems .

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
