My first technical guess is going to be a bad hard disk drive or virus. To test for virus you will need to boot from a bootable antivirus CD and scan your computer. If it freezes as soon as it starts scanning and will not scan, your HDD is probably bad. To test the HDD, take it out of the computer, put it in another computer or cable it up to USB adapter set for HDD to USB connections. Access the drive from another computer using this technique. If not, you will have to take the computer to a repair shop. But this usually can not be more than 3 things total, bad drive, virus or heating issue (I am not thinking heat as the primary cause because if the pc is cool, it could freeze at different times until it reaches the over-heating point and most computers are set to power off, not freeze, anyway).

Which part of the "Installing updates.....Do not turn off computer" was difficult for you to understand? You interrupted the installation of important updates so now you have some half-written and corrupted system files that a Startup Repair can't fix.

Your only solution is to restore your computer from a backup if you have one or do a clean install of the OS, driver and applications.
