Question:
Computer going slower..?

Well, Here's my setup:

Model - Studio 540S
Processor - Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz
Memory (RAM) - 6.00GB DDR2
Operating System - Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit edition)
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 3450 (supporting HDMI)
Monitor - 22-inch flat panel Widescreen

I'm not sure how that will help, but, you know. So, I got this computer about 5 or 6 months back. don't get me wrong, it still runs very nicely, but I've noticed a bit of a dip when it comes to the performance. (Doesn't start up as fast, some of my programs will crash on me, sometimes folders will lag when I try to bring them up etc.) Also, I've noticed that flash games are laggy on my computer now. They weren't before, but now, I always get lost, or killed in my favorite free games because the FPS plummets down to 1 or 2 for a while.. Think I might need some new drivers?

One, how do I edit what automatically loads when I start my computer? I want to wipe my startup list. Secondly, how could I improve my computer's performance without having to download programs? I plan on de-fragmenting, and running virus checks, but it just seems as though I can't stop it. Should I back up my files and re-install? If you've got any advice for me, by all means, feel free to e-mail me!

Microsoft Registry Problems = Slow Computer!

The Windows registry, Containing information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of your computer, whenever you make a change to the Control Panel settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry.

When the Windows registry becomes very large, your computer’s can become very slow and it can cause it to be unstable.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"

Some programs like to check the internet for upgrades. Turn off Automatic Updates.

Also you have to go into most programs to change the settings. It will be in the Options. Uncheck anything that want to check internet for upgrades, updates. If you have Nero then uncheck Nero Scout.

If you use the internet a lot then you probably have a lot of stored web pages. Change the settings in Browsing History in Internet Options.

If you defrag then turn off Virus programs before you start. You also do not need Virus programs running constantly if you haven't downloaded anything recently (in my opinion) or are not connected to internet.

Ctrl +Alt+ Del will show you what processes are running. Qtime usually sits in there as do other useless products. Quicktime seems to be becoming more obsolete by the day unless you have a Mac(?).

Well in almost all communities, your internet is literally plugged into some box on or near your street. When everyone plugged into that box try to max out their internet connections you may experience some slower internet. As for your computer, it does have something to do with it. Your web browser has to load, and your computer runs it. Viruses can also slow down your computer and take up a lot of your internet connection, making it appear slow

To increase the speed of your computer, do the following:

1. Click on Start

2. In the "Start search" box type msconfig and hit ENTER

3. The System Configuration Utility window opens

4. Select the "Start Up" tab and de-select any obvious program that you think should not run in the background (things like adobe updater, google updater and any other software package that you simply don't need to run all the time). It's safe NOT TO de-select anything you are not sure of.

5. Restart your computer.
