Question:
Having lots of trouble selecting a gaming GPU!?
2013-04-16 13:44:40 UTC
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ ALL INFO:

I am building my first PC for mainly battlefield 4 (switching from console) and I am having trouble selecting my GPU, there is just so much to choose from! So basically I am interested in the EVGA GTX 680 BUT, also interested in the Radeon 7970. There are pros and cons to both of these cards and I will be explaining more so please listen :)

I will be using my computer just for gaming.
Which Games?
CoD, Battlefield and CS.

Whats my price? $500-$600

With the EVGA 680 people prefer it simply because its Nvidia and is a better software and other bells and whistles (heat, noise etc.) BUT the 7970 is extra in 1GB, also gives a better performance. The bad things are its almost 2x as loud and creates more heat due to the power but with a game like BF4, Graphics are HEAVY. So i am basically trying to get the best performance with a single GPU P.S - Most likely to overclock in the future. Hope you guys can help! Here are my system specs:

Intel Core i5 3570k @ 4.3 Hz
Corsair Vengeance 2x4 (8GB) @1600 MHz
Gigabyte Z77 UD3H Motherboard
Corsair 750w supply

Thanks guys!

I haven't looked into the 7970 and only know about the 680.

I'd go for the 680. You can later add 1-3 extra 680s if you wanted to improves graphics even more, if it starts to become outdated in 2-3 years.

None of those games as for more than 1GB of VRAM on max settings. That means you could pick any of those cards, and you'd be fine. I have a gtx 670 4gb, and the gtx 680 would give about a 5 - 10 fps increase. The gtx 670 4gb does get quite hot. I use the evga x precision program to change my heat curve. I live in a hot area though. So if you do live in a hot area as well, I'd definitely not recommend a video card that is hotter than a gtx 680. My 670 sits at about 65C max while gaming intensely with the fan at about 65% and that makes it really loud actually. When the fan is a 40% and I'm not playing games it's at like 33C, and I can't hear it. So I'd go for the 680. Oh, I don't have COD BO2, but BF3 runs at 65 FPS and sometimes it goes to like 55, then back to 65+. CS:S runs at 120fps easily. CS:GO is the same.

Both are great cards and will run those games without a problem.

The choice of GPU between those two is just a matter of preference.

Do you prefer NVIDIA? or AMD?

GTX 680 and HD 7970 are both monster cards.

If you are running on a single monitor that has a 1080p native display. Don't worry about the pros and cons of each card. Both of them will give you the power and performance that you are looking for. But of course, things will be different if you are running on multiple display. I mean, yeah both cards will do just fine but for multiple display, the card that has more VRAM will perform better.

For a single Monitor, just choose the one that will make your RIG look badass and will manage to fit in your theme.

If you want a comparison between the performance of each card for those kind of games. See this very detailed review and test of both 7970 and 680.

AMD RADEON HD 7970 is the world's fastest video card.Getting that will kill every video game on the planet giving huge FPS at max settings that's possible even with 100 programs running on the backgrounfd. It'll blow out PS4 Graphics performance!!!!

And getting Dual AMD 7970 will....no...don't even try to think about it.It'll give you nightmares.

you will no longer have the flexibility to particularly build a working laptop or pc till ultimately it grew to develop into into already pre-equipped. listed below are some specs good for gaming. CPU: Quad middle or extra beneficial the two AMD or Intel CPU RAM: extra then 4GB GPU: 460 or 5770 or extra beneficial GPU yet check out this producers for gaming laptops. Asus Acer MSI Alien Ware yet as quickly as you like the suited bangs for the money, build your self a working laptop or pc.
