OK many of these people have no idea WTH they are talking about and its hella lame....
Newayz, If you are reinstalling windows without REFORMATTING, a.k.a. fdisk, then you dont need to back up individual files cause it only overwrites system files. If you are fdisking it wipes out your entire hard drive so you would need to save anything externally, as in, anywhere NOT on your hard drive. You cant put them "deep" in your drive :-/
About the registry, some of your programs will still work some will need to be deleted, then reinstalled. If your computer is having problems and thats why your reinstalling then you shouldn't try to save your reg so it will work after reinstall.

It's very important to note that when you reinstall, anything can happen. Anything can go wrong. Your system may not boot back and you may never be able to login. Lot of things can go wrong although chances are low.
That's why it is highly recommended that you backup all your data to an external drive before you do anything. Get yourself or borrow a external USB drive and backup all your data to that drive before you start reinstalling. In that way, when the reinstall completes and your data is missing, you can get it from the backup you took.
With reinstall when using either windows vista or windows 7, it will save all your old data into windows.old folder. With Windows 7, you can use the data migration feature to keep your data. Regardless, you should also backup your data like I mentioned earlier to be safe.

Move everything you want to save deeply into your hard drive and then back it up as well. Any program that is not connected to you windows program will still be there when you reinstall your windows, unless you are formatting your drive. If this is the case, put everything you want saved on an exterior source to save it.

Get hard drive back up. Back up all of the files you want to keep and then reinstall once you're finished reinstalling windows.

There are on-line services that you can back-up your data to.
Be sure you have all your drivers before you re-install.
When you do the re-install, partition your harddrive into 3 partitions; for booting (your Windows), data and back-up. It'll make things a LOT easier the next time (and there always is a next time).

You can save pic ,music ,videos , and other files but not programs. i recommending putting them on a flash drive or if you can' t get into windows hook it up through slave on an other comp. and pull the files off from there.
