Go with Xubuntu (XFCE Desktop) or Lubuntu (LXDE) if you have a slow machine. They will give you a huge speed difference on an older slower machine. Make sure your not judging speed by the Live CD!

If you already have Ubuntu installed simple install XFCE or LXDE, you don't need to reinstall a variant of Ubuntu just to change your desktop environment. If you have the current Ubuntu 11.10 installed you can also switch to GNOME Classic as it uses much less resources than Unity.

If you dont like proper ubuntu why not try xubuntu or kubuntu both use a less heavy install and graphical interface so older machines work better. Then there is fedora and opensuse, both are good. If you want something like XP then there is always mint linux it has the look and feel of XP to start with...

Me i like debian based so i have ubuntu, kubuntu and debian itself. all are really easy to learn and extremely well supported (better than microsoft).

That depends on the actual age of the hardware. This past week I rebuilt a system that was date-coded 2001, and built for Windows ME (2000). It has a Pentium 4 @ 1.4GHz and 384 Mb of RAM. I installed Mint LMDE XFCE for it's lightweight desktop. At idle, it uses about 34% of it's memory, and feels a bit slow when doing more than one thing at a time, but otherwise it is great.

For you, I would recommend LMDE Gnome, but be sure to look at older blog posts about changing the software repositories before you update the system.

What is 'old and slow'?

If you've got an OK computer that's just a bit old and rundown, then I'd try Lubuntu. It's well - L(ightweight)ubuntu.

If you have a really crap computer then I'd try Puppy Linux. It might not look as good or be as good as (L)Ubuntu but it does the job.

Ubuntu is a pretty version of the Debian kernel.... You can try just plain debian if your familier with ubuntu it should come easy for you :) Also it doesnt have all the high end graphics of ubuntu so it should run good. I can say on a VM with very little allocated to it it runs just fine!

You can also try "Damn Small Linux" http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ It might be what your looking for as far as simple web browsing...

Arch, Crunchbang, Damn Small Linux, Tiny Core, and Puppy Linux are good choices. Crunchbang is Ubuntu based and would work the best and look the best out of the box.

Xubuntu or Puppy Linux Both are suitable for slow computers

How slow are we talking? Lubuntu (based on Ubuntu with a lighter interface) may run well, as would Debian with LXDE. If your computer is really slow, SliTaz or Tiny Core may be more to your liking.
