Information:
Now I have 2 disks.
Disk number one has a total of 75 GB.And two partitions.C and E. C has 9.5 GB and has all system files an the OS. And E has 65 GB and is filled with videos, music, and pictures.
Disk number two has a total of 1400 GB and two partitions(D and unallocated). D has 50 GB and has nothing in it. And the unallocated partition has 1350 GB in it and is empty and unallocated.

Conditions:
So we currently have two hard drives.Hard Drive One(80 GB and contains system files and OS), and Hard Drive Two( 1400 GB empty and unallocated). And we have one hard drive outside the computer(500 GB and is filled with movies, films, videos and music).
What we want:
We wish to put the OS and system files on the 500GB hard drive and switch it with the 80 GB. We formatted a part of the 1400 GB hard drive into partition D.Then we copied all the files of the C Disk and we pasted them into partition D. But it did not start up.

Conclusion:
We have: 3 hard drives
1: 80 GB, contains OS ,System files, music, videos.
2: 1400 GB,contains nothing, and is unformatted.
3. Is outside comp., 500 GB, contains music, videos, and movies. I wish to put all the files that are on the C disk onto here and switch them. And we wish to allocate the whole 1400 GB.
Conclusion:
In the end we want the my computer screen to look like this:
500 GB - C( 50 GB with only OS and system files)
-D(450 GB programs)
1400 GB 2-4 partitions for storage( music and videos and maybe games)

Hi, Your idea sounds alright, but 50 GB for OS and system files is too much.About 20 GB is plenty.Actually, the 10GB you have presently allocated for it is just about right

Regardless, if you want to transfer the OS ,try the following programs:

EASEUS Partition Master http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Related and possibly needed as well is Disk Copy http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/

Related TODO Backup http://www.todo-backup.com/

BTW, you can't just copy & paste system files and expect it to boot -this really should be done with a program designed for it that also creates the MBR.Preferably done outside the OS ,like via a bootable CD.

The tools described above will help you.

Sequence: This all depends on whether or not the 500GB drive is to remain as a USB drive or to be mounted internally.

If as a bootable USB drive, your BIOS has to support USB booting.

It's slightly more troublesome than mounting the drive inside and booting from it.I would do it for a second system, but not on my main OS.

Keep in mind that after you clone your present OS, do NOT boot with the other drives connected, it will upset the drive designation and won't appear as C -which is what you want.

To Begin with.. deleting or changing partitions can have nasty effects on files you already have. if at all possible, back up your files before you begin. there's several programs available to do the task of changing or deleting partitions. Partition Magic is one. i prefer to use a program on a Linux Live cd (linux also comes in handy if your pc suffers from other problems making it un usable). The version i use is Puppy Linux. free to download and use... http://www.puppylinux.org the "Live cd" runs in ram, and does not need to be "Installed" to use or try.

If you choose to use Puppy Linux, first get it running on your system, then click Menu (start button), System, then "GParted Partition Manager" and follow instructions. once the changes are made, shut down, remove the disc, and restart in windows. Windows will probably start with scandisc, because of the changes, but your files and operating system should be fine.. as long as you havent deleted the partition. Just resize it , or format the unallocated space if possible

When you changed the OS partition (drive), did you also reset the BIOS to start from the new partition/drive?

I think you'd do all of this easier with something like partition magic or some other similar software. Vista and Win 7 both have built in partition managers, but XP did not.

Get Partition Magic. It is what it says it is and it will do almost anything with partition configurations.
