dos is very old but still dos is used in the modern operating systems (os) but is not used as much it is used as a back up to the new dos systems i still think dos will be around for a long time as long as windows lives dos is used to boot up windows xp (its a newer version but can still get affect by viruses but the new service packs (sp) i think replace it with a different one windows vista uses and even newer version so it is immune to viruses in xp and below

DOS is just the disk operating system. It is essential to allow the machine to find, communicate with and control the disks. It has been incorrectly used to describe software which does more than that for some time. The MSDOS and IBM DOS were the standard for home machines originally. The name carried as DOS for the collection of programs used to make use of the drives and machine once this communication established. Microsoft dropped MSDOS on Windows NT and used the NT operating system to incorporate all the additional services. They then provided the command window to allow for terminal use a an admin tool. This has continued on through Windows 2000 till today. So you do NOT actually see any of th actual DOS, which has become a very small program just doing the essential work. Unix/Linux and Mac OS have never used an equivalent to MSDOS. Logically, DOS in its' true form can ONLY do a fixed set of routines, so actual DOS on all operating systems is nearly identical with no direct user access. Console windows are provided on all systems to allow low level control of the OS (note not DOS)

If you are really asking if DOS is still used in the IT field, then the answer has to be NO, and it hasn't been used for a very long time!
DOS is a very old and primitive operating system with no built-in security or user ownership of files.
NTFS was always used as the standard for any serious computer use, and it is the basis for the current Windows 7 operating system. Microsoft still has a very large share in the IT operating systems market, but more and more companies are moving to open source solutions such as Unix and Linux.
