Answer
they're all backwards compatible unless specifically stated otherwise which is highly unlikely.
Answer
8x AGP is not yet a common standard. Also, if you look at all current graphics cards. They are AGP slot backwards compatible. So, the answer is "yes, of course an 8x AGP card will work with a 4x AGP slot because it is backwards compatible".
Answer
Yes, I agree. If the card is 8x it will support any speed up to 8x. It will not have a problem handling 4x speed. I have never seen a card that wouldn't.
Answer
I believe that an 8X card MUST be able to run @ 4X,2X,or 1X.
8X cards will fit in 1.5v slots but there could be problems with the signalling voltage.
You need to check if the card is universally capable of running on both 1.5V or .8V
Answer
I just experienced this issue. I upgraded the video card with a new one, which is AGP 8X (PixelView GeForce FX5700 PDF, 256 MB, AGP 8X). I just realized that my mother board actually only supports up to AGP 4X (Iwill P4E), after I encountered the problem when running the video bench mark, which indicated low performance. Therefore, the AGP 8X card "may" work on mother board with AGP 4X but with some problems in performance.
I also read some information on other web sites, that AGP 8X works on 0.8 volts signal, while AGP 4X and 2X work on 1.5 volts signal, however, the AGP 8X card can withstand the 1.5 volt signal (it will not damage the card).
Answer
In my experience, No! I recently bought a Joytech/Apollo Bloody Monster 3 8X Nvidia FX-5900XT card. I have a Gigabytes dual MP mobo. I took out my 4X Asus FX 5200 and put the new one in. The motherboard did not recognize it and beeped that there was no video card present. I put the Asus back in and it worked fine. So I guess maybe not all brands of cards are compatible with all mobo's. Now I have to get a mobo that says it supports 8X!!
Answer
yes it will and does.i have a mobo which supports 4x, and i bought a new ati radeon 9200se 8x agp card.it works but does not give the desired result and speed.best to upgrade the mobo supporting 8x agp.
Answer
This issue of backward compatability refers to the motherboard and not the graphics card. However some cards on the market are swithable between 4x and 8x. I have found as general rule that one should only use 2x 4x cards in a 4x board and 4x + 8x cards in in 8x board due to the voltage requirements. Hope this helps, just research the graphics card you are buying in depth.
Answer
i have the same problem I bought a geforce 5200 which is 8x but does not work in my 4x agp slot
Answer
Simple--the answer is YES, YES, YES, YES IT WILL WORK JUST FINE AND DANDY. I have a Radeon 9500 pro, capable of operating at 8x AGP. However, my motherboard's AGP slot is maxed out at 4x, yet the card still screams. So again, yes, it will work fine.
Answer
Yes
Answer
Downward compatibility is mostly a theory. And if your board has a 4x slot and you buy an 8x card, the card will function at 4x. So it would be better to get a 4x card if you plan to stick to that board longer.
Answer
Please check this website:
. In theory, regardless mobo issues, it should work...
Answer
YES,YES,YES,YES,YES,YES,YES,YES,!!!!!!compatability in the speeds have the back ward compatibilty. if you have a 8x video card and your going to run it on 4x motherboard, of course it will run. the problem may arise on the voltage compatibility, agp 2.0 has 1.5 volts while agp 3.0 has 0.8 voltage, if your cards is agp 3.0, its voltage is 0.8 so just check for compatibility on the motherboard. -NEO...
Answer
A Graphic Card AGP 8X put on my P4 motherboard 4X doesn't work. The Bios beeps and does not recognise my new Graphic Card. When I put back the old 4x, it works back to normal ? where is the backward compatibility in there ? I gues sI can use my AGP 4X on a new 8X motherboard, but what is the point ? I gues sI am unlucky as this seems to be wokring fine for some, not for me...:'(((
Answer
Just a Thought...but maybe your New Video Card is DEAD?I have been involved in the same issue and I truely believe that it will run...Most Cards state that it supports (UP-TOO) 8X therefore simply stating..it will support it.Just a thought though......thanks..

From nvidia.com
Question: Will an AGP 8X graphics card work in a motherboard which only supports up to AGP 4X mode?
Answer: NVIDIA based graphic cards which support AGP 8x mode (Accelerated Graphics Port) follow the AGP 3.0 specification. The AGP 3.0 specification retains backwards compatibility with older AGP 4x technology. All NVIDIA Geforce and Quadro GPU's which support AGP 8x mode are downwards compatible with AGP 4x motherboards. When a graphics card which operates at AGP 8x mode is installed on a motherboard which only supports up to AGP 4x mode, the card will automatically switch to AGP 4x operation.
So the answer is YES, if it is an Geforce card it shold work, if it dosn't, update your bios on your mobo ;)
Answer
Well, well, well Every one is telling us that 8x VGA will work properly with 4x AGP mobo, even nVIDIA tell us that it will work, sorry BUT NOT PROPERLY !! Look at this now: ASUS CUSL2 ; ASUS TUSL2-C ; ABIT ST6 ; Gigabyte 6OXT-A rev.1.1; I had all of this motherboards BUT they didn't work properly with 2 of my Graphic Cards. The first one was GF FX5200 128MB 128bit TVOUT DVI 8x and the second one was Asus GF FX5600/GE 256MB 128bit 8x and they didn't work properly, ofcourse they are working properly but only with the Nvidia drivers (Microsoft Corporation on WinXP SP2) and when I download any drivers from the web(from 5.6. to 9) and install them , they work, but when I start some of this applications 3DMark 2003 or NFS Underground 2 (on medium details) my computer is restarting with 3 mobos and with 2 Graphic cards. I don't know maybe I'd changed everything: RAM,Audio Cards; Hard Disk;CD-ROM;BIOS is updated with the newest 1014beta for Asus CUSL2; EVERYTHING, but NO, NO, NO the computer is restarting again and again on this applications so PLESE HELP ME and tell me what is rong or tell me what drivers I have must download!!
And ofcourse can we ask nVIDIA why theirs GeForce FX Series and higher(8x), makes this problems on all i815 Chipsets with 4x AGP ?!
