Trying to make my computer support better video games?

I'm thinking about buying a new graphics card, if that's going to help with anything, to make my computer run better video games. The lag is incredibly annoying. Right now, it only runs games like Half-Life 1, Halo Combat Evolved with the lowest graphics (yet, it still lags) and other of this kind.
I don't mind playing just these games (Halo CE is a lot of fun) but I would like to do it without any lag. With this occasion, perhaps I could get some other games. Therefore, I was wondering if you could tell me what I could do to make this happen. What I would need. I would like to play games such as Minecraft (yes, even Minecraft lags), Assassin's Creed or Left 4 Dead. Here are my computer's components right now:

Mainboard: Gigabyte 945GCM-S2L
Chipset: Intel i945G/GZ
Processor: Intel Celeron D 351 @ 3200 MHz
Physical Meomory (RAM): 3072 MB DDR2-SDRAM
Video Card: Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family
Hard Disk : Seagate ST3250310AS ATA Device (250GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20
Monitor Type : LG Electronics L1718S - 17 inches
Network Card : Realtek Semiconductor RTL8168/8111 PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional Media Center 6.01.7601 Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
DirectX : Version 11.00
Windows Performance Index : 2.9 on 7.9

Now, what do you think I should add in order to make those games work well?

I was in ur position 2 years ago

I decided on saving my money to buy a new pc instead

IMO the parts of older pcs keep degrading and losing support over time and the last new part u order to replace in ur pc will also be obsolete and expensive overall

Save up and get a i3 with 4gb ram and decent graphic card while retaining this pc and its parts to reutilise in the i3

Dont mind the hard disk drives, operating systems etc. They are all second level requirement.

Concentrate on RAM, video drives, graphic cards

RAM is very much important in improving system speed

First off all, Intel celeron is basic level processor. U have to improve that. Improving the processor would result in changing the entire mobo

Latest games require minimum 4GB DDR 2/3 RAM &

1GB full graphic support

Adding graphic support alone is not goin to work anyway.

Just get a new one, there is too much to replace to be worth it.

You should have at least 4Gb RAM, 8Gb is better.

Your processor is really outdated. You should have at least 2 cores with around 3,5 - 4Ghz.

And a new motherboard to support it all.

And you need a video card. The ones on the motherboard wont work for gaming.

And to power it all up, you will need around 500-600w power supply. I guess you got around 430? wich is what i had in my old computer.

But if you really cant get a new one. i reccomend finding a new processor that is compitable with your motherboard and a video card. It should boost the performance a lot. 3Gb RAM will propably work out.

Is that a laptop or a desktop!? anyways,I assume its a desktop and I recommend getting 4gb RAM,intel pentium dual core 2.2GHz,64 bit windows 7 ultimate and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 if you're on a budget...but if u dont really care about the money, then here's my gaming rig's specs-

Mobo-Asus Maximus VI Extreme

Processor-Intel core i7 4770k

RAM-Corsair Vengeance Pro 16gb DDR3 1600MHz

Video card-two Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 cards

HDD-Western Digital Caviar black 1tb 7200RPM SATA 6gb/s

SSD-Corsair neutron GTX 120gb SATA

OS-Windows 7 ultimate 64bit

PSU-Corsair AX1200i

Liquid Cooling-Corsair H100i

Case-Thermaltake Chaser MK-1
