I was looking at my computer and i noticed a remote desktop installation that i hadn't installed. Has someone been looking at what i have been doing on my computer and if so is it possible to find out who and how do i remove this? I gave the computer to a friend to fix and they are the only ones i think that could have installed this device.

I think what you mean is Remote Assistance.

No one has installed because that has been part of the System

Settings since XP and is also on Vista and W 7 as well.

No one can access your computer using that unless YOU

give permission for that to happen in the first place AT that

time and when a session finishes it cancels that permission.

That is also why you have a firewall to prevent any infiltration

to your computer from an outside source.

Remember what happens on TV and in films does not happen

in real life to an individual. Hackers do not go after individuals

and those that do, know you personally anyway so they know

your setup, passwords, ISP address etc anyway!

It is very unlikely that someone has been accessing your computer that way - especially if you do not have a wireless internet connection.

If you do have a wireless internet connection, they would first need to crack your password for your router/network. Usually, the most common encryption is WPA, and this will keep about 80% of people out. There ARE people who can still get access if they are determined, it would take... about an hour? That is if they know what they are doing.

There are more secure encryption methods you can use, but you would have to purchase better hardware that supports that sort of software. Also, when creating the password for the network try to make it at least 8 characters long and alpha/numeric. This will increase it's security massively.

Now once they have gotten past that, they would need your actual computers administrator password to do anything of worth to them.

That, of-course, is if you have a wireless internet connection.

The only other way someone could even think about connecting to your computer, would be to walk inside your home, or up to your computer and plug in theirs with a cable - either directly to your computer or onto your home network. They would still need the WPA password to access the internet, but would then only need your administrator password to access your PC directly.

Again, this will take a determined person to do this.

Does someone hate you so badly?

If you want to disable any remote desktop connection ever being available, I suggest you search for "remote desktop connection options" along with your operating system, this should give you all the guidance you need.
