Ok just a little while ago my computer was working perfectly fine. A couple days later everything went south. First of all i suspect a virus. I can not open anything. If i was to try to uninstall programs an application not found error comes up. And EXE.32 is always appearing in a bunch of those messages. I think i found the source program that gave me the virus but it won't let me delete it. It says access denied whenever i try to delete it. I found out later i could delete everything using command prompt. Theres one problem when i go to open up command prompt it asks me what program i want to open command prompt with. It does this for every program that doesn't give me an application error when i try to open it. Even with the internet it asks me what program do you wish to open mozilla foxfire with and i just open it will mozilla because it is on the list. I know it is dumb. I just want to know how and what i have to do to get my computer working again. I bet alot of you are going to say put all your files into a backup whatsahoozet. NO! I don't know how to do that kind of stuff. I has a disk operating system cd thing. I also have other cds but they all say that it is already installed and only use it to reinstall them. If the answer is using a cd what cd and where do i get it. it is a dell desktop. But no i don't know where i bought it because my uncle got it for free when he bought a car and then he gave it to us. If your going to say SOL don't i want ananswer and things like that just wastes my time. Please someone help me.

You have a Windows install disc, so do this......................

No format re-install of Windows XP

What you’ll need-

A Windows installation CD with the serial key.

First enter ‘Setup’ – When booting up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either Del, Esc, F2 or F12. Depending on your system, one of these will get you into ‘Setup’. Once there, change the ‘boot order/sequence’ to boot from the CD/DVD drive first.

Insert the Windows CD, save and exit. If you don’t get a screen saying ‘Press any key to boot from CD’ re-start. If you do, then press a key.

When it boots up from the CD you’ll see a screen with ‘Setup is inspecting your computer’s hardware….’ then the ‘Windows Setup’ screen.

After a couple of minutes, you’ll see a screen with ‘Windows Setup-Setup is starting Windows’

On the next screen ‘To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER’ press enter.

Setup will now look for ‘a previous version of Windows’ If your copy of Windows isn’t highlighted, do so now. Once it’s selected press ‘R’ for ‘Repair’.

What happens now, is that Setup will find and delete corrupt or damaged system files and folders, then replace them with new ones from the CD. When the new files have been installed, Setup will rebuild any damaged parts of the registry but leave the rest as is. This means that you don’t lose any of your installed drivers/programs.

Once Setup has finished this part of the process, it will automatically re-boot, so you have to remove the CD (replace the CD once the boot has finished).

The first re-boot will take some time so be patient. When Setup starts again don’t panic! It will look as though you’re doing a full re-install, you’re not, it’s part of the repair.

The next couple of screens will ask for language settings and the serial key, enter them. After giving this information the next two or three screens can be ignored, they will move along a lot faster than the progress bar indicates as none of the settings have been changed.

When the repair is finished you’ll see the ‘completing installation’ screen, then the system will re-boot, again, this will take longer than usual (remove the CD).

You’ll next see a ‘Welcome to Windows’ screen then be asked if you want to register and maybe to re-activate depending on how bad the damage was. Complete the screens as necessary.

The last screen is the ‘Thank you’ one, the system may re-boot once more normally.

That’s it! All done.

Woah there Tiger! Slow down and give us all a few more facts to help you find the best answer - OK? - If you cannot find the answer, just say so.

1. Make and model of computer?

2. Operating System?

3. Service Pack?

Then do you have access to a computer that actually works OK?

Do you have, or can you borrow a USB memory stick?

The plan is (once we know just what PC and OS you have) to steer you toward a downloadable Antivirus (or "silver bullet" if the virus can be named)

Just take it slow and steady, and try to stay calm, else the virus wins!

PS - Dell will not help you unless you can give the name of the original purchaser (from new) whose name is registered against that Service Tag - trust me, I tried it for my nephew who was given one by a friend.

OK, so you got the Operating system CD??, if so, insert it in the CD Drive now and press windows key and R together to open Run or go to Start-Run, type 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes and press enter, you may have to wait around 20 minutes for the process to finish. Download and install malwarebytes from here http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes.../3000-8022_4-10804572.html and scan your system thoroughly. After completing the above processes, create another user account and try to access your files again from the newly created account, if sucessful, delete the previous account and remember to click 'keep files' when doing so.

Well there are a couple of things that you can do. If you do not have anything on your computer which you need then use one of the CDs which says Operating System (already installed) and follow the instructions...it will wipeout everythign and install a fresh copy of the operating system.

You can also download Malwarebytes AntiMalware for free at http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and scan your computer..it will remove most of the spywares and malwares which are blocking your applications to run. you can also use SmitFraud Fix http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

and remove the unwanted registeries. It would be better if you use both.

best of luck..

Ok, so I'm guessing you don't have a system restore point or its too far gone for that. The Operating System Disk is the one you use and it normally has a holographic label on it. You can purchase one for like 200 bucks at an electronics store or you can try to get a boot leg one(which is illegal and cannot be registered) other than that you can try free operating systems you can order disks from or download like Linux Ubuntu(beacause its more like Windows):

It don't matter how you got your Dell; their support techs should give you assistance regarding your problem. Their support has a live chat & the tech should beable to help you resolve this matter. One thing you will need is the "SERVICE TAG #" you will find this on a label on the bottom of the tower next to a white one;usually around 7 digits & letters. hope this helps
