Question:
Can I Install Ubuntu Using USB Stick?
2009-03-25 09:44:57 UTC
Since my Windows XP messed up when I rebooted it saying, "NTLDR is missing... Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". And I do not have my recover discs and will not pay money to buy Windows again, I was wondering if their was a way to install Ubuntu using an USB stick.

See I'm using Windows 98 as I'm typing this up and it does not have a CD-RW so I can not burn the Ubuntu ISO image to a CD.

It would help me out a lot if somebody could explain to me (if their's a way) how to install Ubuntu using USB

YES YES YES you can do this. Not only that, but the same program that helps you do this will also allow you to install Ubuntu ONTO your USB stick. Either way, your computer MUST support booting from USB. Get the program below. To install Ubuntu FROM the USB stick, you must install the "Live" version of Ubunto onto your USB stick. Then boot to Ubuntu Live and there will be an option to install Ubunto onto your regular hard drive.

Oh, and to Tyler, the poster above me: Yeah... http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ has a whole section on installing Knoppix to a USB stick. You can also install the Ultimate Bood CD for Windows ( http://www.ubcd4win.com/ ) onto a USB stick.

If you can install VMWare Servier on your Win98 machine you can load Ubuntu via the iso and then use it to create the LiveUSB.

There are a bunch of websites out there that show how to make a Ubuntu LiveUSB but unfortunately the LiveCD LiveUSB creator is the best. You should also look into getting a external CD/DVD burner for cases like this in the future.

You can request Ubuntu on CD from the canonical website, then you only need an ordinary CD rom to install it from the CD.

Incidentally, to fix your Windows setup, all you need to do is copy the ntldr.exe file onto a usb stick from someone elses PC. You will find it on the C: drive. just copy the file onto your C: drive and you're good to go.
