My mother keeps telling me that theres no difference in a laptops processing speed than a desktop PC and she thinks that making games go faster has to do purely with the memory. Is she right in any way?

it has to do with multiple things

the video card GPU

the processor (cpu)

and RAM

if these things are identical, then it does not matter if its a desktop or a laptop!

Let's say hypothetically, that you had a thousand dollars to spend on computer. That thousand dollars will by alot more powerful desktop than a laptop. Speed, performance, will be better on the desktop. On the other hand, if you spent a little more on a laptop to serve your needs, then you have the advantage of portability. I would go with a minimum 17" screen on the laptop for gaming and movies and such. I have both and I prefer a laptop for most things. I do everything on my desktop but, it's main purpose is more business than pleasure. The opposite holds true with my laptop. If you prefer the desktop then I believe that's what is best for you. In the end, you will get more product for your dollar.

Laptops are more expensive because they're compact. But usually Desktop computers are better for gaming Because they are more easily upgraded. also laptops overheat easily while desktops don't.

For the most part. ya bro, your mom is right. Desktop, or laptop. its the same thing, its whats inside the counts. if there are 4gb of ram in the laptop and 2gb of ram in the desktop the laptop would be faster. Same the other way around.

and if they both have the same amount of ram and the same processor speed then they are exactly the same. i'd still go with the Desktop if you're a hard core gamer. Cheaper and easier to upgrade.

She is not right at all, Desktops are BUILT for performance, laptops are for mobility. For my 900$ desktop, an equivalent laptop would cost 2 grand easily. Go with a desktop for gaming.

Desktops are simply much better for gaming. First of all the processing power can be greatly different. The reason is heat. Laptops cannot disburse the heat a desktop can. Another thing is the video cards are build in and you can't update them once they become outdated. a Desktop is the way to go for gaming.

when compared to a desktop, laptops are generally less powerful because the components in a laptop are made to fit in a more portable package. this means it can't be as powerful as a desktop because it has to generate less heat and use less electricity. as for what you should buy, thats all up to you. i bought a laptop for college because it's more convenient for me to bring my computer back home to school and vice versa. I can still play mant FPS and computer games because I have a pretty decent mid-range graphics card. you can still game on a laptop, it'll just cost more

your mother isn't entirely true making games go faster depend on many factors not just the memory alone but laptop processors tend to be less powerful then desktops but they are good laptops out there that you can buy but they are more expensive i'd rather go with a desktop pc if your a gamer

I does have something to do with memory, but mostly a game is fast based on the graphics card and the processor.

A laptop can have the same specs as a desktop

but most laptops aren't as powerful as most desktops.

There are a lot of factors that can improve performance, especially for tasks with high demands like games.

To name just a few:

- CPU speed

- RAM speed

- GPU speed

- HDD speed

- amount of RAM

Of course desktop PCs are better suited for higher performance because their room is not limited to a confined notebook case. That way they can afford better cooling systems and by that better (but hotter) components (like CPUs).

Also, usually notebooks are designed to use as few power as possible.

Technically there is no difference in the way notebooks work as opposed to desktop computers.

And in terms of RAM it's very efficient to have enough so that the game doesn't have to write data into the pagefile in order to free RAM for vital data and then, when it needs the data it wrote to disk earlier, read it back into memory while writing other data down. It's very noticable for loading screens for example (and you don't get as many lags if you run around huge maps that need to load back into the RAM).

There are some very good gaming laptops out there, but for the same amount of money you'll get a much more powerful desktop than you will a laptop.

she's wrong to a degree if all things being equal then it would not matter

but in reality you have speed differences in notebooks due to heat buildup

hard drives in notebooks are usually slower some very slow

batter life and screen resolution will eat up battery so they are usually set lower

i have seen a notebook that will kill almost any pc

it sells for $42,000 but 99% of notebooks will always be inferior to a desktop

cpu busspeed/hard drive speed/memory/ etc will make it slow and usually they have a crappy video card which makes it almost impossible to play games

Yes, but as a matter of fact, it all depends on what kind of desktop or laptop you have.

E.g, spending £300 on a desktop and £300 on a laptop, the desktop will most likely perform better.

Simple answer, yes, desktops are alot better as they are cheaper to have a better one if you understand.

laptops low memory single core maybe dual if youve got the money usually 2gb ram and small hdd or desktop quad core higher speeds usually ehh in the range of 4 to 8gb and huge hdd so desktops are insane for gaming unless u need portability

As a rule yes. $ for $ yes.

That said their are some very fast very expensive laptops.

You have a lot more room in a desktop, they handle heat much better, & they are easier to work on & upgrade.

Have fun

it is the same speed. but with laptops, it's hard to play games on unless you plug a mouse. it's usually harder. laptop batteries usually don't last long the more you use it and that's why most people keep them plugged in to a power outlet if they don't have a desktop.

The difference lies in price. a $2000 PC will be much faster than a $2000 laptop.

Generally, the highest end hardware is only available for PCs also.

There are laptops that are good in gaming such as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX/GTS series. The bigger memory you have the faster the performace of your game will be.

No. She is wrong. It has to do with the processing chip in the computer.

you can get fast laptops if you wanted.
