I have windows xp and my harddrive is about half full. Last night I used the defragmenter, then ran the analysis and it said I should run the defragmenter. So I did this about 5 or 6 times before I said enough...But the analysis always says I should defragement....any ideas why?

Since you have used the hard disk for a long time, the storage of the files are fragmented that many files are dispersed on the different hard disks.

Such fragmented files may slow down your hard disk and increase the risk of losing and damaging the data. So, the Disk Defragmenter of Windows collects and handles all of these fragments.

You should clear up the junk information and check whether there is any error in the hard disk or not before defragmentation.

After that, you can clear up and optimize the fragment. Therefore, you have to make good preparation as follow:

1. You should clean up the junk files and information. Since your system work for a long time, the junk files may cram many unconscious operations may result in junk files.

They are temporary files when installing the programs, cache files after browsing, DLL files left by deleting software and error files produced by shutting down the computer forcedly.

It is common that most users are inclined to use the disk cleaning up programs in the Windows, at the same time, you can also turn to certain more powerful defragmenter to help you.

2. You should check and restore any mistake in the hard disk. Of course, you can have a try of the Disk Scan Program of Windows firstly.

Although it really takes a lot of time to repair it, as long as you are patient enough, the most errors and mistakes can be restored after complete and detailed scanning.

It's because of fragmented system files. These are important files that should be defragmented for the best performance.

Unfortunately, the Windows built-in defragger and the freeware defraggers cannot defrag these files.

Try the following:

First do a disk cleanup. Right click the drive in My Computer, choose Properties and Disk cleanup. Delete the temp files, temporary internet files, empty the recycle bin etc. Don't compress the drive contents.

Head over to http://www.diskeeper.com and download the free trial version of Diskeeper 2010. It's the best defragger for Windows and defrags everything including large files and system files, even with low free space. Most importantly, it prevents up to 85% of fragmentation from occurring in the first place.

Install Diskeeper, turn on the auto defrag mode; Diskeeper will do everything in the background automatically, and you can use your computer as usual.

Disk Defragment basically tries to recollect fragments of deleted or moved files. Once it finds pieces, it bunches them together to try to save space on your hard drive. However, some files that have been deleted cannot be defragmented, and they will stay that way forever unless you do a system restore or a reformat. I dont recommend doing this because these fragments dont pose a huge threat. Best thing to do is not worry about it. If trying to make room, try to delete junk. If you have old games or programs to delete, use the Revo-Uninstaller ( just search on google) This advanced uninstall software will dig deep into your system to delete all traces of the program, which will prevent fragmentation.

PS-its free :)

Maybe your drive is not getting defragged or some program running in the background may not be letting it complete. Or your drive is getting fragmented fast (It happens if you add/delete/edit lots of files..such as video/photo editing etc).

I think the best option is to download the trial version of Diskeeper2010. It defrags with as less as 1% free space, is fully automatic and has intelliwrite which prevents 85% fragmentation from occuring. So if your drive is really getting fragmented that fast, this will be your best bet.

It is recommended that you should first run the dick cleanup tool to clear the useless files from your computer before the disk defragmentation. Good luck!
