Because they cost double the price for the same hardware. Oh, never mind...

There's a lot of FUD around suggesting you can build a PC for much less than you can buy a Mac, but you can build a PC for much less than you can buy a PC too. Truth is, for the roughly the same price you get roughly the same spec hardware no matter what pre-built system you buy at a consumer retail store.

The thing I've found in my decades of use is that I have less everyday crap to deal with on the Mac. I do also run several operating systems on a Mac using virtual machines in Parallels (Windows, Chrome, several Linux distros) so I have the best of ALL worlds.

But to be honest, if you're just doing basic stuff and don't need any hardcore hardware you may as well buy a low-end budget PC (a market Apple don't build any models for) and save some cash. You can even try Ubuntu for a virus-free life by downloading a free 'LiveCD' ISO from their site and burn a CD you can boot from to check it out without having to install.

Well I'm a computer technician, and I can truthfully tell you that macs are one of the biggest rip-offs in the industry. Yes, they have the best support team; but they are no where near worth what you pay for them.

You can only compare a computer by what hardware it has. For example, if you spend $1000 on Apple.com buying a mac, if you spent that $1000 elsewhere then you'd have a hell of a lot less powerful hardware in the mac. Apple charges more because they feel their products are more premium (and in some cases, they are right). But if you compare the quality of the products they have with the quality of a custom-built computer, even if both computers are on the same budget, you'll quickly see that what you're really paying for is the brand, not the actual product.

I've built multiple computers myself, both high-budget and mid-budget. And I own a $750 computer I built myself. The point is, if you buy a windows computer from, say, Dell.com, the product may not be as good as a custom built PC. Even if the specifications are the same, the brand of each product may change the speed and long-term life of the computer.

Finally, I'll end with this. Go with Windows. It's more customizeable, you can build and repair a computer yourself, even if you're not a guru (by simple 'googling' of your problem), and you can even upgrade it a lot cheaper, without consulting some high-paid technician from Apple.

Good luck, and I hope my answer satisfied you.

Mac's are for people too dumb to learn how to use a real computer, kind of like AOL's "keyword" system seemed good to help ol' grandmaw and grandpaw use the internet (way back at first, when al gore invented it). After a while, people figured out hey, I can just go to websites myself by typing in the address bar (and the lights turned on), now aol is extinct.

And apple would have been, too, if they hadn't suddenly started making 90% of their profit making toys like the ridiculously overpriced and under-utilizable iphone, and the ipod (for people who couldn't figure out how to use a $30 Zen Mp3 player :) )

It's an industry catering to people who want dumbed-down versions of something. If you need it, get it.

They're not if you know how to properly use a PC. If you are not as technically advanced as some people and find yourself prone to viruses then yea, macs will seem better because not many viruses are written for macs.

The thing I don't like about macs is that you're paying more than double for the same hardware that PCs use but are alot cheaper.

PCs are more bang for buck, Mac will give you premium *looks* whereas PC will give you higher performance at the same price without the shine.
