I am building a new computer and have everything bought or picked out except for the case and mother board. I will be using a AMD Phenom Quad Core along with Vista as an operating system and need a good mother board. I use my computer for 30 firefox tabs of research while runing 15 open charts and such in E*trade. Thank you-Bill

I depend on the customer ratings at newegg.com. Here is what they say. Gigabyte and Asus are both good brands.

I have used Biostar but wasn't impressed with their BIOS options for customizing. If you don't intend to overclock, go with the Biostar.

A motherboard is a main board which holds many other components together and helps to connect and manage them to form a complete system. Motherboard is a general term so there are many different types. For instance, an Intel motherboard, is different from an AMD motherboard. They are both motherboards, but they support different architectures, they manage and take different components as well as some similar components. Motherboards may have different form factors to fit specific needs. Some motherboards are specialized for smaller footprints to conserve space, usually at the cost of power and performance.

Can I talk you out of Vista? It slow and annoying. Perhaps XP Pro would be a better choice. I have not heard good things about the Phenom Quad Core either. Besides, at present, Windows can't use the all the cores at same time anyway.

However, if you insist on using Vista (limited to 3.5 GB or RAM using the 32 bit version) load it up on RAM.

Check out tigerdirect.com or newegg.com for socket AM2 motherboards which you will be limited to. My favorite:
